have written since I was very young. One of my first stories, composed during my elementary school years, was about an elephant who got stuck in a little boy’s bathtub.

Since then, I’ve dabbled in fiction, spent many years writing with and co-facilitating writing improv groups, and completed numerous critiques and edits for friends’ novels. But my true passion when it comes to writing leans to narrative non-fiction and using words to help people think critically about and connect more intimately with the individuals and the larger world around them.

During my time at the Colorado Springs Independent, I primarily edited others’ copy — but I was also given the opportunity to write for both the news and arts & entertainment departments. I have earned a variety of awards for my stories, including:

  • First Place Excellence in Journalism Awards in both Education Reporting and Health Reporting from the Colorado Professional Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists;
  • First Place AltWeekly Award in Breaking News for my contributions to our staff’s coverage of the Waldo Canyon Fire from the Association of Alternative Newsmedia.
  • Third Place Excellence in Journalism Award for News Columns from the Colorado Professional Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

You can also find my work in magazines such as: Spirituality & Health, Utne Reader, Colorado Springs Style, Springs Magazine, and the Colorado College Bulletin.

One of my biggest honors was receiving the 2011 GLBTA Community Award for a reporter with a print publication from the Colorado Springs Pride Center.

A complete collection of my writing for the Colorado Springs Independent can be found here. And a portfolio of other work can be found here on Muck Rack. But here’s a sneak peek of just some of the people I’ve interviewed, issues I’ve delved into, and experiential pieces I’ve completed for them.
